Speaker's Forum: Jeff Smith of the Institute for Information Democracy

Join us Saturday June 27th 2026 to learn about community organizing from Jeff Smith.

Our speaker for the day is a founder of Grand Rapids Institute for Information Technology, plus:

  •   Grand Rapids Rapid Response Trainer

  •   Author of "A People's History of Grand Rapids"

  •   Co-Creator "Media Activists Toolkit"

  •   Community Organizer

Jeff Smith is a longtime resident of Grand Rapids and a public anarchist who has spent over four decades in social movement work. He co-founded the Koinonia House, a radical hospitality project for the unhoused and a sanctuary for Central American refugees in the 1980s, and has extensive experience in accompaniment work in Central America and Mexico. He also founded the Grand Rapids Institute for Information Democracy (1998) and the Grand Rapids People’s History Project (2010), which collected oral histories from activists and residents resisting the dominance of the city’s billionaire class.

We'll be meeting at the Grant Library for this event. Doors open at 10am. Join us for refreshments and conversation before the speech at 10:30am.
